Eventide History & Tradition
Fairing Way and Dwyer Home are not only flagships of Rice Eventide Communities, they are an evolution of more than a hundred years of vibrant senior housing on Boston’s South Shore.
A History of Serving Seniors
While Fairing Way and Dwyer Home now welcomes residents to the South Weymouth campus, our predecessor the William B. Rice Eventide Home has a long and distinguished history of serving seniors on the South Shore.
Through the pioneering efforts of our founder Dr. Elmon Johnson and stalwart Quincy resident Mrs. William B. Rice, the Rice Eventide Home was born in the 1920s in Quincy, Mass. The official opening of the Adams Street residence was celebrated in 1936.
While the community began as a retirement home with a small infirmary, it eventually was licensed by the Department of Public Health as a Level II long-term care facility and began to offer 24-hour skilled nursing care.
For nearly 90 years we provided high-quality nursing and supportive care to thousands of senior citizens, regardless of their income level, from our gracious home in Quincy.
A New Future in South Weymouth
Thanks to the exceptional care provided at Rice Eventide, our residents enjoyed a higher quality of life and greater longevity. However, Rice Eventide eventually found it had moved away from its original mission to serve and inspire a wide range of older adults in its senior living communities.
We also found that we had outgrown our Adams Street location. The building could not accommodate the advanced equipment that our team was using or wanted to use to provide superior services to community members.
These factors motivated the development of a vibrant model of 55 plus retirement communities — Fairing Way — and a move to the exciting new community of Union Point, in South Weymouth.
We have partnered with an award-winning developer, Rogerson Communities, to create an exceptional senior apartment living environment for South Shore adults aged 55 or better. At Fairing Way we offer the same hospitality and service that has defined Rice Eventide for the better part of a century, this time in distinctive senior living apartment-style homes with a flexible approach to lifestyle and health needs. Our Dwyer Home neighborhood continues our legacy of superior senior care.
