  • New site for senior complex - The Boston Globe

    BY Emily Sweeney

A Quincy nursing home has announced plans to expand into Weymouth and build senior housing and a new nursing home on the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station property.

The William B. Rice Eventide Home proposes to build 192 independent living apartments and 46 skilled nursing beds as part of SouthField, a new community of homes, shops, and offices scheduled to be developed on the shuttered military site over the next decade.

... “I think it’s a great location because it’s similar to our current site, and surrounded by a vibrant, intergenerational neighborhood,’’ said Haglund. “The piece of property that we’re interested in is close to public transportation and close to the planned retail center of SouthField, so it will be easy for people to grab a cup of coffee or buy the newspaper.’’

SouthField in the Spotlight

  • $25 Million Deal Reached - Associated Press

    By Bob Salsberg, Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) — A long-stalled plan to redevelop a former Naval air station south of Boston appears ready to move forward after the U.S. Navy reached final agreement to sell the remaining property it owns for $25 million, Massachusetts officials and members of the state’s congressional delegation said Monday.

The Southfield development calls for construction of nearly 3,000 homes, along with retail and office space. The project is expected to create about 10,000 permanent and temporary construction jobs over the next decade, backers said.
